As we prepare to celebrate the 234th birthday of the United States of America, my heart and mind is filled with gratitude for the founders of our country. One of those men, John Quincy Adams, said, “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: It connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.” There are many in our day who do all they can to erase the reality of God in the founding of our nation.

There is no doubt that these founding fathers were sure of the very reason why the Pilgrims first came to this land. The Mayflower Compact, which was the first governing document of the Plymouth Colony, signed on November 11, 1620, began with these words, “In the name of God” and it goes on to say in the next paragraph that they undertook their voyage “for the glory of God and advancement of the Christian Faith.”

The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut written in 1639 is considered to be the first written Constitution in our nation. In its preamble, it says that the state owes its origin to “the wise disposition of his divine providence,” and that “the word of God requires…an orderly and decent government established according to God…to maintain and preserve the liberty and purity of the gospel of our Lord Jesus which we now profess.”

Our very first president George Washington in calling for church services every Sunday during the Revolutionary War said, “To the distinguished character of a patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of a Christian.” When a visitor to the Continental Congress wanted to know which one was General George Washington, someone said, “He is easy to spot. When the Congress begins to pray, Washington will be the tall man who will go to his knees.”

I could go on and on giving quotations and facts about the founding of our country as a Christian nation. So, let the naysayers babble on, but our nation was founded on the principles of God’s Word. And our only hope as a people is to return to the truths of God’s Word. Let us all pray for America to experience an old-fashioned, Heaven sent, God honoring, and sin defeating revival beginning in our hearts, homes, and church.

See you Sunday!
